AI and DC Certification Process

Guiding Coaches to Excellence in Taekwondo

The Alberta Taekwondo Association (ATA) is committed to supporting coaches in achieving and maintaining the highest standards of certification. The Assistant Instructor (AI) and Dojang Coach (DC) certifications are vital steps in ensuring coaches are prepared to guide athletes at all levels, from local competitions to international events.

Why Certification Matters

AI and DC certifications, aligned with the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP), provide coaches with the skills and qualifications to:

Certification Requirements

Assistant Instructor (AI) Certification

To achieve AI certification, you must:
Complete the AI Portfolio (available on the Taekwondo Canada Website).
Pass the AI Formal Evaluation (live or video, video must be audible).
Complete the MED Online Competition Introduction through The Locker e-learning platform.
Obtain Emergency First Aid certification (Standard First Aid + CPR-C recommended for DC certification).
Submit an application for evaluation (Forms and Applications on the Taekwondo Canada Website).

Dojang Coach (DC) Certification

To achieve DC certification, you must:

Complete the DC Portfolio (available on the Taekwondo Canada Website).

Pass the DC Formal Evaluation (live or video, video must be audible).

Obtain CPR-C certification (typically a two-day course).

Participate in a referee seminar.

Submit an application for evaluation (Forms and Applications on the Taekwondo Canada Website).

Certification Workshops

Assistant Instructor and Dojang Coach Workshops are offered to help coaches:

– Familiarize themselves with the material.

-Complete their AI or DC portfolio.

-Prepare for the formal evaluation process.

Challenge Process for Certification

Experienced coaches may challenge the certification process by demonstrating their competency without undergoing workshops.

Steps to Challenge Certification:

✔Submit an evaluation application, including:
-Relevant education or training (NCCP or otherwise).
-Coaching experience (Taekwondo or other).
-Dan level.

✔Pay the evaluation fee.

✔Undergo a formal evaluation to demonstrate competency.

Additional Requirements

All coaches must register with the Coaching Association of Canada (CAC) through the Coaches of Canada program. Registration requires:
✔ A police record check (via SterlingBackcheck → for $25 + tax).
✔ Two reference letters.
✔ A coaching resume.
